As a Black therapist, my approach is shaped by both my clinical training and my lived experience. There are certain pillars in my practice that I treat with deep seriousness, because your well-being often depends on them. When you step into my office or join a session, you are entering a space where these core realities are acknowledged, validated, and centered.
I don’t play about the reality of racism. Racism is not an abstract concept; it is an active force that impacts the nervous system, influences professional opportunities, and dictates personal interactions. Whether it manifests as microaggressions in the workplace or systemic barriers in your community, your experience of these events is real. In our work together, we don’t need to debate the validity of these experiences. We start from the position that your perception is accurate, and we move forward from there to address the impact it has on your daily life.
I don’t play about the tendency to “play small.” Many of us are conditioned to shrink ourselves, to minimize our needs, and to prioritize others’ comfort over our own authenticity. We learn early that taking up space might feel unsafe or unwelcome. My practice is designed to challenge this conditioning. We explore the roots of that impulse and work toward creating a version of your life where you feel comfortable occupying your full self. You do not have to apologize for existing or for needing support.
I don’t play about nervous system safety. We live in a society that often pushes us to ignore our physical signals. If you are constantly in “survival mode,” your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do, protecting you. But living there permanently creates immense exhaustion. My focus is on helping you understand these signals, recognize when your system is dysregulated, and find strategies that support a sense of safety and regulation in the here and now. We look at the body as an ally, not an obstacle.
If you are looking for a space where these realities are not just understood but prioritized, let’s connect. You don’t have to navigate these complexities by yourself.
If you are ready to explore these patterns and prioritize your regulation, please reach out to book a consultation with me, Shamalla James, MSW, RSW.
